Heikki has been a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering since 1999. He is the head of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (CVPRL) at the Department of Computational Engineering of the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland. He received his D.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 1994 from the Department of Information Technology of LUT. Prof. Kälviäinen’s research interests include computer vision, machine vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, and digital image processing and analysis.

Heikki has supervised 28 doctoral and 165 master’s theses, written more than 220 peer-reviewed scientific articles (journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters), and 49 other research publications, and has been a responsible leader in 51 research projects (a total of 6,3 MEUR). Heikki’s h-index is 33 with more than 5800 citations (Google Scholar). He has served 33 times as a Ph.D. thesis reviewer in 8 countries.

Besides LUT, Heikki has worked for more than six years in other universities: as a Professor of Computing at the School of Information Technology of Monash University Malaysia and as a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Information Technology of the Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic, the Center for Machine Perception (CMP) of Czech Technical University, and the Center for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing (CVSSP) of the University of Surrey, UK.
